Body, Mind, and Spirit: Culture and Health in America
Utah State University
Logan, Utah, USA
April 13-15, 2000
Sponsored by the Obert C. and Grace Tanner Foundation
and the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences
A) Schedule of Events
Day 1- Thursday, April 13, 2000
The topic of the day will be devoted broadly to "culture and
illness" including discussions of how bio-medical and complementary
health-care professionals define illness and how these definitions are
shaped by the technologies, beliefs, knowledge, and behavioral systems
specific to these very different medical traditions. All the speakers, in
one way or another, address the above issues in their daily work. After
the opening blessing, the program will include a key-note lecture and a
panel discussion. Dr. Allen Neims (Ph.D./M.D., University of Florida,
College of Medicine) will introduce the subject of potential interfaces
between spirit and science in bio-medicine, providing a brief background of
bio-medical paradigms of illness and disease and opening discussion about
how to combine an open mind with scientific rigor to assess the role played
by mind and spirituality in health and healing, relationship-centered care,
and integrative medicine. Following the key-note lecture, a panel of
practitioners representing various medical and cultural traditions will
introduce the audience to how these issues come-up in the context of their
daily interactions with patients (Panel titles include: Modalities for
Rethinking Reality, The Role of Faith and the Power of Prayer in Health and
Healing: Leaders Who Teach Faith and Prayer, The Cultural Context of Body
Geography, and The Role of Spirit and the Power of Prayer in Health and
Healing: Personal Experiences). The afternoon will be devoted to a
round-table discussion with state-wide health-policy makers which addresses
the questions: who pays for health-services and how are these decisions
made? What is the role of patient satisfaction and/or what constitutes
"evidence-based" efficacy of complementary therapies?
Day 2- Friday, April 14, 2000
Day 2 will be broadly devoted to the topic of "culture and healing"
and will include two keynote lectures and a point-counterpoint discussion
about a) the existence (or non-existence) of biological universals in the
experience of suffering and healing and b) the challenges of assessing
efficacy of complementary modalities through scientific inquiry. Keynote
speakers include: Dr. Sherwin Nuland (Yale Professor and surgeon, author of
The Wisdom of the Body, How We Die, and How We Live), Dr. Robert H.
Schneider (Dean of the College of Maharishi Vedic Medicine). After the two
addresses, a round-table discussion and debate of key points addressed by
the two speakers will be facilitated by Dr. Jay Jacobson, Director,
Division of Medical Ethics, LDS Hospital). Following the key-note lectures
and discussion, a second panel of practitioners (representing various
medical, religious, and cultural traditions) and a panel of USU students
who have been conducting original research into the topic of Culture and
Health in America will present further examples of different modalities of
healing and will address issues raised in the symposium. (Panel titles
include: Music Therapy and Post-traumatic Stress Syndrome, Working in Two
Worlds: Health Care Practitioners Working in Complementary Medicine, and
The Social/Cultural Context of Illness). Later Friday evening, Dr. Lori
Arviso Alvord (Dartmouth Medical School, co-author of The Scalpel and the
Silver Bear) will discuss her personal experiences of straddling two
cultures (Navajo and Anglo) and her work incorporating the discussion of
cultural frameworks of illness and healing into medical student training at
Dartmouth Medical School.
Day 3- Saturday, April 15, 2000
The morning of Day 3 will be devoted to hands-on workshops given by
the invited practitioners. Audience participation will be arranged through
pre-subscription. Workshop titles include: Healing Circle, Music
Therapists, Reiki Demonstration, Tai Chi, Belief Systems and Consciousness,
Taiko Drumming, Therapeutic Touch, and Accupuncture and Chinese Medicine).
Additional activities during the three day symposium include
musical presentations emphasizing the role of music in health and healing.
Performers include representatives from various cultural traditions
including African-American and Native-American artists. Ceremonial and
prayerful openings and benedictions that incorporate a sense of spirit into
all of the symposium proceedings will be exercised throughout the
proceedings.
