The Are of Dying II
A New York Open Center & Tibet House Conference
Friday-Sunday, March 21-23, 1997
This conference was made possible, in part, by a grant from the
Project on Death in America, Open Society Institute.
For more information contact:
The New York Open Center
Tel: 212-219-2527
There is now a clear yearning in American society to talk about
death in newer and franker ways. This conference offers an in-
depth opportunity for open, heartfelt exploration of this critical
and essential subject; and for the sharing of practical techniques
and inspiring examples of new approaches to the art of dying. It
brings together many of the most outstanding innovators in
palliative care--doctors, nurses, hospice workers, therapists--with
members of the general public and with those who have explored the
nature of death from a spiritual or philosophical perspective. The
goal is to expand and deepen the conversation on the many vital
issues we all must face when we confront this most inescapable of
human experiences.
- What is death?
- Who or what dies?
- What ethical issues must be confronted in the face of terminal
pain and suffering?
- What lessons can we learn about preparation for death from
other cultures and spiritual traditions?
The times demand a real engagement with this long-taboo subject.
As Americans display more receptivity to post-death
possibilities, more insistence on death with dignity, more
possession of rights and personal empowerment in the face of
medical authorities, and more curiosity about near-death
experiences, the elements are combining for a fundamental
revisioning and renewal of our approach to death.

Naturopathic medicine, sometimes called "naturopathy," is as old as healing
itself and as new as the latest discoveries in biochemical sciences. In the
United States, the naturopathic medical profession's infrastructure is based
on accredited educational institutions, professional licensing by a growing
number of states, national standards of practice and care, peer review, and
an ongoing commitment to state-of-the-art scientific research. Modern
American naturopathic physicians (NDs) receive extensive training in and use
therapies that are primarily natural (hence the name naturopathic ) and
nontoxic, including clinical nutrition, homeopathy, botanical medicine,
hydrotherapy, physical medicine, and counseling. Many NDs have additional
training and certification in acupuncture and home birthing. These
contemporary NDs, who have attended naturopathic medical colleges
recognized by the US Department of Education, practice medicine as primary
health care providers and are increasingly acknowledged as leaders in bringing
about progressive changes in the nation's medical system.
Founded in 1986, the AANP represents licensed naturopathic physicians
throughout the U.S. The AANP also sponsors an Annual Convention, which this
year will be held August 20-24 in Scottsdale, AZ. Both the 1997 AANP East
Coast Conference and Annual Convention are open to the media.

American Association of Naturopathic Physicians
1997 Conference
DoubleTree Resort
Scottsdale, Arizona
August 20 - 24, 1997
The convention will be held at the DoubleTree Resort. Frank Lloyd Wright
designed this lovely property. There are 22 acres of beautiful green
landscaping, with pools and fountains and hot tubs, all enclosed. The
sense is one of being isolated in an oasis with hundreds of your closest
friends. And of course, the room rates--$75 for single or double
occupancy--can't be beat.
The program includes many of naturopathy's rising stars speaking on a wide
range of important topics. Research, nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy,
mind/body medicine, manipulation, acupuncture, communication, spirituality...
There's something of interest for everyone!
Bring case histories to share with your colleagues, questions to ask the
experts in the Exhibit Hall, props for the talent show and sunscreen.
Mark your calendars now--August 20-24. See you there!
(And remember, it's a dry heat!)
The Conference will draw hundreds of medical professionals in the field
of natural medicine from all over the country. The conference is intended
primarily for naturopathic physicians. It is also open to medical doctors,
licensed acupuncturists, osteopathic physicians, chiropractic physicians,
other health care professionals, medical students, and representatives of
the media.

Beyond the Brain: Frontiers in Consciousness and Healing
St. John's College
Cambridge, England
August 24 - 27, 1997
Sponsored by:
The Scientific and Medical Network
The Institute of Noetic Sciences
Since our inaugural Beyond the Brain meeting in August 1995, the pace in
consciousness studies has, if anything, quickened. The Journal of
Consciousness Studies is now well established and there are meetings being
held in every continent. The largest scale meeting in Tucson in April 1996
featured around 50 keynote addresses and over 500 posters! Some of the
topics considered ventured into the transpersonal arena, but these were far
outnumbered by more conventional presentations from physics, biology,
psychology, artificial intelligence and neuroscience.
At our last meeting we drew on a variety of disciplines to propose
epistemological models going beyond the brain, thus challenging
orthodoxies underpinned by various forms of materialism which all insist that
consciousness is actually caused by brain processes. Materialist models are
unable to accommodate phenomena suggesting that aspects of consciousness
transcend space and time, let alone the possibility of survival of bodily
death. They are therefore inadequate and will need to be replaced by models
which do address the multiple layers and facets of human experience. The
agenda of this conference is to explore approaches consistent with current
scientific findings but which account for the kind of evidence largely
ignored by the mainstream.
This year we are placing a particular emphasis on consciousness and healing
as we feel that medical models are due for an overhaul if they are to
include the creative interaction of consciousness and body suggested by the
mounting evidence from mind-body medicine. Together they will specifically
address such themes as:
- A participatory epistemology in which consciousness is fundamental.
- The interface between psychiatry and the sacred.
- Models of healing and subtle energy.
- The extended nature of the self in evidence for reincarnation.
- Possible influence of discarnate entities on mental functioning.
- Implications of the near-death experience for our understanding of reality.
- Global vision and healing.
We have invited a pioneering group of world-class speakers to share their
ideas with us and put forward new and more comprehensive frameworks of
understanding. In response to feedback from last year we have not offered
any parallel sessions, so that you will get the chance to hear all the
speakers and will not have to make agonising choices! There will be plenty
of time for informal exchange over meals and drinks where you will be able
to exchange ideas with other participants. There will also be an
opportunity for poster sessions.

the foundation of eastern philosophy, culture, healing and training
methods such as Chinese medicine and martial arts. Yan Xin Qigong is a
modern form of the traditional Qigong, encompassing a combination of
ethical cultivation and meditative practice.
Dr. Yan Xin is a popular Chinese Qigong master. He was trained by nearly
thirty traditional Qigong masters and has received high education in both
western and traditional Chinese medicine. Tens of millions of Qigong
practitioners in China and hundreds of thousands of practitioners outside
China have heard Dr. Yan Xin's Qigong lectures. Large numbers of people
attending these lectures have experienced remarkable healing effects. Dr.
Yan Xin is also widely recognized for his pursuit of modern scientific
research in studying the effects of Qi, the fundamental concept of the
traditional Qigong. The IYXQA has invited Dr. Yan Xin to be the
Conference's special guest lecturer.
Yan Xin Qigong is safe for everyone to practice under the guidance of the
principle of De (virtue). Its methods have been passed along through many
thousands of years, and Dr.Yan Xin has adapted them for modern society.
Statistical studies show that Yan Xin Qigong helps people increase
physical energy, improve work efficiency, achieve sustained happiness and
enhance wisdom.Yan Xin Qigong practice promotes contributions to social
well being and the training aids individuals to understand the connections
between the body and the mind, the self and others, and the mankind and
the nature. This knowledge helps one meet such challenges as illnesses,
individual and social stresses, and social conflicts.
The IYXQA is a registered, non-profit, volunteer international
organization with headquarters in the U.S. Its mission is to
promote health, well-being, peace and harmony by encouraging the spread of
Qigong. The IYXQA facilitates Qigong learning and study, and is committed
to working with people from all walks of life.

4th Annual Body & Soul Conference
Park Plaza Hotel
Boston, Massachusetts, USA
September 19-21, 1997
Sponsored by New Age Journal and
Inferface holistic learning center.
For some time now, cutting edge scientists have been articulating a
new world view based on an insight that mystics have long understood:
The universe is a living web of relationships in which everything
is interconnected. At the past three Boston Body & Soul conferences,
we have explored the growing impact of this holistic world view on our
lives and culture, especially in the realms of healing, spirituality,
creativity and social transformation. In this--out fourth annual
conference--we invite you to take this unique learning process to a
whole new level: A remarkable constellation of leading edge
physicians, psychologists, teachers, writers, performing artists and
healers will guide us deep into the heart of personal and social healing
in community.
The conference itself is shaped like a three-part symphone: We begin with
an opening celebration featuring the spiritual insights of
Thomas Moore, followed by drumming, cello, story and dance.
Saturday, join a 250-voice chorus in singing African-American spirituals
lead by Ysaye Barnwell, then be inspired by the incredible
Maya Angelou. On Sunday, say YES to the call by
Alice Walker to decolonize the spirit and let it soar in a
new voice.
Community gatherings and a special salon luncheon provided time to
engage in lively conversation, reconnect with old friends and make new
ones, and recognize the fellow pilgrim and teacher that is each one
of us. Additional daylong intensives with several of the faculty are
available on Friday and Monday.
Become part of Body & Soul, join us and our internationally renowned faculty
as we explore new pathways of transformation and healing--four ourselves,
our communities, and the earth.

complementary and alternative treatments outside of mainstream medical
services.
Canada's first-ever Complementary Medicine Satellite Conference Series
will provide a unique opportunity for Canadian participants to learn of
complementary medical practices directly from the source.
The first conference in the series is on Traditional Chinese Medicine

conference features a video presentation (specially produced in China
for this event) on Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine and Qigong. This is
followed by an interactive question and answer session via satellite
with faculty from China. Finally, there will be live demonstrations by
local TCM practitioners at each site. Come join us to learn about the
common clinical applications, efficacy and limitations of these
treatment practices in China, how they are practised and often
integrated with Western medicine, and the views of providers and
consumers in China.

American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) 32nd Annual Conference
La Jolla, California, USA
October 24 - 27, 1997
American Academy of Environmental Medicine
Our philosophy is simple: Identify and treat the cause of disease.
Environmental Medicine is an integration of concepts drawn from the primary and
specialty care medical fields, and the basic sciences. The resulting health care
strategies have profound implications that can significantly increase the quality
of life for patients, while decreasing the longterm cost of health care.
Our members recognize that human beings, though marvelously adaptable, must
struggle to cope with an often hostile environment. The American Academy of
Environmental Medicine is dedicated to the purpose of education in the recognition,
treatment and prevention of illnesses induced by exposures to biological and
chemical agents encountered in air, food, and water.
Discovering the cause-and-effect relationships of disease allows a physician to initiate
treatment protocols that can result in genuine healing, not just a masking of symptoms.
Please join us at our 32nd Annual Conference as we present new insights and
therapeutic approaches that reflect the latest scientific advances in medicine

Integrating Mind, Body, and Spirit in Medical Practice
Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, USA
October 30 - November 1, 1997
Sponsored by: Duke University Medical Center
Who Should Attend
- Physicians
- Psychologists
- Nurses
- Clergy
- Social Workers
- Allied Health Professionals
- Healthcare Administrators
Course Goals and Objectives
Recent advances in medical research and technology have led to improved health care
outcomes over the past two decades; however, for many patients with chronic
illnesses, medical care is not curative. It is becoming increasingly evident
that lifestyle and psychosocial factors play an important role in both the etiology
and management of chronic illness in this country. In addition, quality of life for
many patients with chronic illness is determined primarily by their lifestyle
choices and psychospiritual coping abilities. The primary touchpoint for having
a positive impact on these biopsychosocial factors in medicine is the health care
provider -- patient relationship. Healthcare providers are becoming increasingly
aware that we can cultivate our abilities to facilitate integration of mind, body,
and spirit for patients in a way which improves outcomes.
This conference will focus on providing specific psychosocial skills to health care
providers to enhance patient care and potentially improve health outcomes, and
will examine broadening medical practice to include an integrated psychospiritual
approach to patient care. In addition, practitioners will be provided with a
framework to facilitate their own self-care and healing, which can improve their
own work satisfaction in an era of increasing demands.

Dynamics of Spiritual Healing
Double Tree Hotel - Columbia River
Portland, Oregon, USA
October 30 - November 2, 1997
What is spiritual healing? Is it only offered through a specific
religious tradition or has it been made available through all of
the great religious and spiritual traditions? In fact, do you even
have to be religious to be able to receive or offer spiritual healing?
Is spiritual healing the same thing that is presently called energy
medicine? Is it what’s called the mind-body connection? Can it be
offered through a psychological venue?
How does spiritual healing work? Does it only work within a religious
community Can it work simply person to person, inside or outside the
context of a spiritual tradition? Are there specific rituals that must
be invoked, particular brain wave frequencies emitted, or precise
states of consciousness arrived at, before spiritual healing can
happen? Is spiritual healing available for double-blind research and
inquiry? Can it be taught or is it simply a natural, idiosyncratic
function that only an infinitesimally small number of individuals
are born with?
How would a health care professional integrate spiritual healing into
his/her clinical practice? Is it even possible, or preferable, to do so?
How would a lay-person integrate spiritual healing into her/his life?
These are the questions to be addressed by The Dynamics of Spiritual
Healing. For those interested in developing their knowledge and skill
in spiritual healing, as well as its applicability to their professional
or everyday life, this is the event to attend in 1997!
The Dynamics of Spiritual Healing offers access to multiple levels of
teaching and healing - body, mind, heart, and soul. Besides exploring
the above questions, there will be an emphasis on music, sacred dance,
energy, ecstasy, consciousness, and Spirit. This weekend brings
together a very special group of teachers, who have each personally dug
deep into the ground of their being and brought forth both practice
and perspectives that freshly illumine this area of human and divine
concern.

The 3rd Annual International Conference on Spirituality
in Business
November 8 - 15, 1997
Sheraton Buganvilias Resort
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
For most of us on this planet, more than half our waking
hours are spent traveling to, from or on the job. Millions of
people are experiencing more stress and less security in the
workplace. Workers at all levels of the corporate ladder are
realizing that in order to be their most productive, they
must love what they do. If not, they experience stress,
anxiety, fatigue, and eventually burn-out.
In the past, corporations have shied away from seminars
and conferences having anything to do with
"spirituality" because there was a preconception
that spirituality meant a particular cosmology or set of
beliefs. But that's the past.
Now, corporations all over the world are making profound
changes in order to foster inspiration, meaning and
connection because they recognize that the old "command
and control" models no longer work. At the same time,
more and more people are starting to realize that fostering
spirit in the workplace leads to increased happiness and
creativity and increased productivity and
profitability.
The real value of the word "spirituality" is in
the ongoing exploration of how it manifests in the workplace,
rather than in a specific definition. We can all recognize
when spirit is blocked in our everyday work environments: low
morale, low productivity, gossip, backbiting, high employee
absenteeism and turnover. And we can point to some of the
signs that spirit does exist in the workplace: honesty,
respect, openness, compassion, commitment to quality and
equality, commitment to the environment, and connectedness
among the employee group.
We use the word "spirituality" in the broadest
sense to allow our whole beings to be expressed in the
workplace, at home and in our communities. The question is
not whether spirituality belongs in the workplace. The real
question is whether business can thrive without spirit. By
approaching commerce with an awareness of how it affects our
planet, our community and ourselves, we can operate in a way
that benefits all three.

December is a time of celebrating birth and light, a time of
giving and receiving. Start your holiday season by coming to
beautiful San Francisco and join us in exploring Birth, Love and
Relationships. Our plans are well under way for an exciting and
inspirational gathering.
APPPAH's last Congress focused on Birth and Violence in our families
and communities. In 1997 we will explore how birth, from
pre-conception through bonding, impacts families and communities in
our ways of relating to each other and the world. Love is a powerful
reality. So is fear. What our babies learn from the beginning,
colors all the rest of their relationships. Our message is an
important one that can contribute to a peaceful future. The Congress
will treat this broad continuum in four interactive panels.
Our popular morning presentations at breakfast will be another
opportunity for valuable information to be shared. We have invited
an exciting mixture of speakers, some familiar, and others new to
APPPAH, providing a wide range of experience, research and
viewpoints from Europe & the U.S. Among them will be Reggie Brass,
Annika Kempe, Marshall Klaus, Bruce Lipton, Benig Mauger, Jeannine
Parvati-Baker, and many others.
Michel Odent, pioneer in the field of obstetrics and primal health,
will give a pre-conference workshop and receive the Thomas R. Verny
Award for Outstanding Achievement in Pre- and Perinatal Psychology
and Health. Other pre- conference workshops will be planned for
those wishing to come early and take advantage of working more deeply
in pre- and perinatal issues with experts in this field.
There will also be scheduled time for open mike, networking, and
special interest groups. Many attendees in 1995 were appreciative
that our fees were low and included breakfasts and lunches. That
policy will be repeated in 1997. Put the date on your calendar!
Plan to come and bring family, friends and collegues. There is no
subject more important to our lives than love and relationships. It
promises to be a great Congress, one that bridge child and parent,
family and community, heart and mind, body and spirit.
Registration Fees:
- Before March 1st: $180 (Special savings for everyone)
- March 1st - September 1st: $220 (Members) and $260 (Non-members)
- After September 1st: $275 (Members) and $315 (Non-members)

The 9th International Conference of the National Institute
for the Clinical Application of Behavioral Medicine
"The Psychology of Health, Immunity & Disease"
Decmeber 8 - 14, 1997
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, USA
Today, in America and throughout the world, we are witnessing a cultural
transformation in healthcare. This change is emerging at a time when
mind/body therapies and approaches to healing are clearly taking shape.
As practitioners, we have achieved a new level of credibility among the
conventional medical community by demonstrating behavioral medicine as a
viable healing methodology that can not only control costs, but increase
overall quality of life.
If you believe that patients should be seen from a holistic perspective
and that body, mind and spirit are not distinct disciplines separate from
each other, then the Psychology of Health, Immunity and Disease Conference
may be useful to you. Our goal throughout this event will be to help you
with specific applications and sources of inspiration to foster your further
use of mind/body medicine.
Practitioners attending this Conference receive a high level of accredited
training. This format is designed to give more educational opportunities than
ever before. We have included eight Intensive Training Institutes as well
as several comprehensive Master Classes both before and after the
Conference. This is the one gathering specifically designed to give you
in-depth information along with the skills and techniques to assist you in
making significant strides within your practice. You will leave filled with
new ideas and strategies that you can begin using first thing Monday morning!
For the past eight years we have created a world class event where like-minded
professionals share ideas, discuss problems and create solutions in all aspects
of their work. Don't miss this change to become acquainted with some of the most
pioneering healthcare professionals in the world. We guarantee
you will find this Conference to be an enriching, rewarding experience
both personally and professionally, for years to come.
Last year we had a sellout crowd and we expect as many to join us this year.
Don't hesitate, make your hotel reservations and register today. We look
forward to sharing this event with you on Hilton Head Island this December.
Overall Learning Objectives

therapies research.

Description of Presentations:
The objective of these courses is to continue to explore the relationship between
spirituality and healing in medicine and to give perspectives from world religions.
The physiological, neurological, and psychological effects of healing resulting from
spirituality also will be discussed. These courses evolved from the original
Spirituality & Healing in Medicine course of December 1995.
For more than 25 years laboratories at the Harvard Medical School have systematically
studied the benefits of mind/body interactions. The research established that when
a person engages in a repetitive prayer, word, sound or phrase and when intrusive
thoughts are passively disregarded, a special set of physiologic changes ensue.
There is decreased metabolism, heart rate, rate of breathing and distinctive
slower brain waves. These changes are the opposite of those induced by stress and
are an effective therapy in a number of diseases that include hypertension, cardiac
rhythm irregularities, many forms of chronic pain, insomnia, infertility, the symptoms
of cancer and AIDS, premenstrual syndrome, anxiety and mild and moderate depression.
In fact, to the extent that any disease is caused or made worse by stress to that extent
this physiological state is an effective therapy.
This work led to consideration of the healing effects of spirituality, since research
later established that people experienced increased spirituality as a result of
eliciting this state regardless of whether or not they used a religious repetitive
focus. Spirituality was expressed as experiencing the presence of a power, a force,
an energy, or what was perceived as God and this presence was close to the person.
Furthermore, spirituality was associated with fewer medical symptoms.
It is now an appropriate time to bring these findings into fuller contact with the
extremely rich and diverse experiences of spirituality and healing of religious
traditions. These courses will continue to explore similarities and differences
amongst long-standing religious practices from objective, scientific research as
well as subjective points of view.
These courses will present data from many religions of the world. Discussions of
physical pain will be emphasized because: it is incompletely treated by current
medical practices; virtually all religious traditions have addressed the issue;
and the experience of pain has been a prominent theme for both scientific and
spiritual discourses on mind/body interactions. Other data on spirituality and
healing and the power and biology of belief will also be discussed. In addition,
these courses will strive to identify future empirical research on the healing
aspects of spirituality in medicine.
