Spirituality & Healing in Medicine V
Westin Galleria Houston
Houston, Texas, USA
March 22-24, 1998
Who Should Attend:
- Physicians
- Psychologists
- Nurses
- Clergy
- Social Workers
- Allied Health Professionals
- Healthcare Administration
Description of Presentations:
The objective of these courses is to continue to explore the relationship between
spirituality and healing in medicine and to give perspectives from world religions.
The physiological, neurological, and psychological effects of healing resulting from
spirituality also will be discussed. These courses evolved from the original
Spirituality & Healing in Medicine course of December 1995.
For more than 25 years laboratories at the Harvard Medical School have systematically
studied the benefits of mind/body interactions. The research established that when
a person engages in a repetitive prayer, word, sound or phrase and when intrusive
thoughts are passively disregarded, a special set of physiologic changes ensue.
There is decreased metabolism, heart rate, rate of breathing and distinctive
slower brain waves. These changes are the opposite of those induced by stress and
are an effective therapy in a number of diseases that include hypertension, cardiac
rhythm irregularities, many forms of chronic pain, insomnia, infertility, the symptoms
of cancer and AIDS, premenstrual syndrome, anxiety and mild and moderate depression.
In fact, to the extent that any disease is caused or made worse by stress to that extent
this physiological state is an effective therapy.
This work led to consideration of the healing effects of spirituality, since research
later established that people experienced increased spirituality as a result of
eliciting this state regardless of whether or not they used a religious repetitive
focus. Spirituality was expressed as experiencing the presence of a power, a force,
an energy, or what was perceived as God and this presence was close to the person.
Furthermore, spirituality was associated with fewer medical symptoms.
It is now an appropriate time to bring these findings into fuller contact with the
extremely rich and diverse experiences of spirituality and healing of religious
traditions. These courses will continue to explore similarities and differences
amongst long-standing religious practices from objective, scientific research as
well as subjective points of view.
These courses will present data from many religions of the world. Discussions of
physical pain will be emphasized because: it is incompletely treated by current
medical practices; virtually all religious traditions have addressed the issue;
and the experience of pain has been a prominent theme for both scientific and
spiritual discourses on mind/body interactions. Other data on spirituality and
healing and the power and biology of belief will also be discussed. In addition,
these courses will strive to identify future empirical research on the healing
aspects of spirituality in medicine.
Presentations:
- The Genesis of the Course, the Relaxation Response and Spirituality
- Benefits of Religious Participation - Social, Spiritual, or Both?
- Spirituality and Medical Outcomes
- The Pursuit of Personal and Society Healing: What Role for Spirituality?

The Psychology of Consciousness, Energy Medicine and Dynamic Change
March 23-29, 1998
La Jolla, California, USA
The definitive practitioner's conference on the clinical application of intention,
intuition, consciousness and the integration of spirituality. Sponsored by The
National Institute for the Clinical Application of Behavioral Medicine.
Dear Colleague, I'd like to personally invite you to join the leading thinkers in
mind/body medicine -- your peers -- at this 2nd international conference on the
Psychology of Consciousness, Energy Medicine and Dynamic Change. Our goal throughout this
event will be to focus on perspectives that enhance a person's ability to change as
we explore groundbreaking developments in consciousness, intention, intuition and
quantum physics.
Although we already have many useful and effective approaches for helping people
change, most theories are anchored in time and space. As we go beyond our limited
experience of the world as a primary material universe, we enter the realm of
energy. This gathering will help us see more clearly that within this realm lies a
vast sea of infinite possibilities. We will bring together a variety of powerful
clinical approaches in which the energetic field is utilized to promote healing,
learning and growth. Concepts and techniques include:
- Bodywork
- Hypnosis
- Consciousness Research
- Intuition
- Dreamwork
- Energy Medicine
- Qigong
The emphasis will continue to be on practitioner oriented sessions that deliver proven
strategic tools you can use to hone your effectiveness and enhance your practice. The
schedule combines 90 minute concurrent workshops that focus on a particular aspect of
application with intensive one, two and three day institutes and master classes that
allow an opportunity to get fully immersed in a subject. Plus challenging, inspirational
keynote addresses as well as close up, intimate dialogues with faculty favorites as they
share their more human side.
We have gathered the pioneers in the field who will emphasize advanced, practical information
you can put to work immediately in your practice. Topics include:
- Understanding Energy Flow and How to Use It for Yourself and Others
- Harnessing the Neurobiology of Healing
- Practical Applications of Remote Viewing
- Thought Field Therapy
- Vibrational Medicine: The Future of Healing in the 21st Century
- Your Sixth Sense: How to Develop the Power of Your Intuitive Mind
- Healing the Emotional and Spiritual Body
Everything about this program has been designed to maximize your time away
from the office. Recreational activities between sessions provide an easy way
to continue conversations. Networking breakfasts and receptions give you an
opportunity to make the connections needed to recharge your battery and energize
your spirit.
In addition to numerous presentations and keynote addresses, there are several
conference intensives which include:
- Alternative Approaches to Mind/Body Medicine: A Comprehensive Certificate Training Course
(Christine Page, MD, C. Norman Shealy, MD, PhD)
- Clinical Hypnosis Training Course, 3-Day Course with Institute Certificate

Psychotherapy, Spirituality, and the Evolution of Mind
Santa Monica, California, USA
May 15-17, 1998
Sponsored By
- Center for the Integration of Psychotherapy & Eastern Thought
- Journal of Consciousness Studies
- Tricycle: The Buddhist Review
Poised at the threshold of a new millennium, we find that traditional paradigms and
frameworks of through are being discarded or transformed. In our increasingly
global civilization, the individual and collective psyche face unprecendented
challenges, calling for fundamental changes in consciousness. At this crucial
point in our evolution, we would do well to remember the words of Ram Dass: We
are the millennium ... we are the consciousness that defines the reality that we are
moving into.
Strongly feeling that the field of psychotherapy is in a unique position to respond
to these challenges and to participate in this transformation of the human mind, we
have created Psychotherapy, Sprirituality, and the Evolution of Mind
to re-examine the philosophical assumptions implicit in psychotherapy and to
reconsider the role of spirituality. We see an exciting convergence between a
spiritual world view and ideas and advances in the scientific understanding of
mind and consciousness. Accordingly, Psychotherapy, Sprirituality, and the
Evolution of Mind will explore what contemporary biological and evolutionary
sciences, on the one hand, and eastern wisdom traditions on the other, have to say
about mind, self, and consciousness.
Psychotherapy, Sprirituality, and the Evolution of Mind brings
together a distinguished faculty of original thinkers, scholars and teachers all of
whom, in addition to their academic preparation and western philosophical
background, are deeply versed in introspective and meditative disciplines. Our
vision is that this symposium will generate original thought, inspire an
interdisciplinary dialogue, and embody the them Psychology Re-thinks Itself.
What Should Attend
Psychotherapy, Sprirituality, and the Evolution of Mind is designed
for mental health professionals and is open to all who are interested in issues of
spirituality, psychological well-being, and the evolution of the brain/mind.
The post-conference clinical workshop is an optional ticketed event and is
available only to licensed psychologists, LCSW's and MFCC's.

The Future of Energy Medicine: Integrating Science & Spirit
Regal Harvest House Hotel
Boulder, Colorado, USA
June 18-24, 1998
The most beautiful and most profound
emotion we can experience is the
sensation of the mystical. It is the
power of all true science.
- Albert Einstein
The body-mind revolution of the past 30 years has been a real turning point for the exploration of
consciousness, healing, subtle energy, and human potential, yet, as human beings, we are more
than body and mind. The ineffable at our core--spirit, soul, consciousness, monad--must now
take its rightful place on the list of essential concepts for the study and practice of healing,
health, and medical care.
This unique conference will explore how the dynamic energies of life, love and intelligence serve
to build a living bridge between science and spirit that positively impact our physical, mental,
emotional, spiritual, and social health. The goals of the conference are distinctly different from
many other conferences in the area of consciousness, healing, and complementary medicine in
that it is a professional scientific meeting with opportunity for scientists, clinicians, and lay
persons to share knowledge and expertise.
Keynote Presentations:
- Joan Borysenko, PhD (The Science of Bodymind and Spirit)
- James S. Gordon, MD (Manifesto for a New World Medicine)

Fluoride Risk Assessment
San Diego, California, USA
June 20-21, 1998
Recent research shows that rats drinking only 1 part per million fluoride
(NaF) in water had histologic lesions in their brain similar to Alzheimer's
disease and dementia. This study was the third in a series of papers
published by Varner et al. Brain Research Vol. 784 No. 12 p 284-298 (1998)
Shocking, yet true and verifiable. In fact , all of the 1600 scientists,
lawyers, engineers and other professionals at the EPA in Washington DC
through the National Federation of Federal Employees local 2050 stated
that there is a causal link between fluoride/fluoridation and cancer,
genetic damage, neurological impairment, and bone pathology. The EPA
scientists Drs. William Hirzy and Robert Carton will both speak at the San
Diego Risk Assessment Symposium. Professor of Chemistry Paul Connett, Ph.D.
will address the environmental impact. Dr. Phyllis Mullenix has published
extensively on the neurotoxicity.
Attend this scientific symposium and learn the toxicology of fluoride and
the mechanism of dental fluorosis. You will understand why fluoride works
topically and why ingesting fluoride as in tablets, water or prescription
vitamins is harmful. The symposium is part of the ongoing review process to
develop an unbiased public health goal for fluoride.
The Public Health Department, Mayo Clinic, UCSD Medical School and the San
Diego County Dental Society, San Diego County Medical Society have been
invited to participate in the scientific review of fluoride. We are seeking
any qualified scientist to support the theory that ingested fluoride is of
benefit. Dr. Hardy Limeback, the Canadian Dental Association expert on
fluoride, said that he could not support the concept of ingested fluoride
being of any known benefit to dental health.

ADD and Autistic Spectrum Disorders: Parents on a Mission
George Mason University
Fairfax, Virginia, USA
July 17-18, 1998
Sponsored by the Feingold Association of the United States
Caring and Sharing
Professionals who are leaders in the fields of ADD and autism spectrum
disorders will describe the new findings they are successfully using for
their own children and sharing with other parents. That's right, our speakers
are p arents of children with either ADD or autism spectrum disorders, and/or
they have been diagnosed with it themselves.
As you know, the underlying causes of ADD and autistic spectrum disorders
remain a medical mystery. Many clues exist in the literature and in the
offices of clinicians who look beyond merely covering up the symptoms.
But it can take many years before the clinical successes get into mainstream
medical treatment.
Our kids can't wait!
We need to know what scientists and physicians are now only whispering about.
We need to learn what professionals with affected children are doing in their
own homes to achieve remarkable results. They will guide you through the
emerging information, providing a true understanding of the resources and
techniques that can help your child.
Who should attend?
This seminar will be of particular interest to parents of children with
behavior or learning problems whether there is a firm diagnosis or not.
Parents presenters have children with symptoms of ADD, ADHD, learning
disabilities, depression, sensory integration dysfunction, autism, or
Asperger's syndrome.

The First Grassroots Gathering on Biodevastation:
Genetic Engineering
Fontbonne College
St. Louis, Missouri, USA
July 17-19, 1998
The Gateway Green Alliance invites progressive groups to co-sponsor the FIRST
GRASSROOTS GATHERING ON BIODEVASTATION: GENETIC ENGINEERING. The event will
address the intertwined issues of genetic engineering, patenting of seeds and
other life forms, worldwide trade in human genetic material, and
monopolization of food production. It will include scientists who have
researched the dangers of genetic engineering and organizers who work to
maintain local control of food production by legislative initiatives and
direct actions.
Confirmed panelists, workshop leaders and organizers include:
- Tulio Avelino (Partido del Sol, Uruguay)
- Beth Burrows (President of The Edmonds Institute)
- Mark Bohnert & Tammy Shea (Gateway Green Alliance)
- Barbara Chicherio (President of The Greens/Green Party, USA)
- Mitch Cohen (Brooklyn Green Party)
- Ronnie Cummins (Director of Pure Food Campaign USA, which organized
the 1997 "Global Days of Action Against Genetic Engineering")
- Steve Emmott (Green Group of the European Parliament)
- Zoe Erwin (Institute for Social Ecology)

Program: The Grassroots Gathering will include the following:
- Workshops on field organizing, coalition-building and media work;
- Workshops on basic issues of biotechnology;
- Keynote address (Vandana Shiva);
- Nonviolent visit to a St. Louis location important for biotechnology;
- Workshops and panel on artificial foods and allergies and other effects on
human health;
- Workshops and panel on genetic engineering vs. ecological balance;
- Workshops and panel on moral and legal aspects of genetic engineering and
genetic discrimination;
- Workshops and panel on economic effects of control of food by multinational
corporations;
- Open plenary to plan the Fall, 1998 iGlobal Days of Action Against Genetic
Engineering;i and,
- Open plenary to build biotechnology networks in the US.
Who does biotechnology affect?
- Farmers.
The biotechnology industry is rapidly destroying what is left of
family farms by increasing the quantity of capital required for agriculture.
(rBGH milk is the clearest example.) American farmers can learn from the
massive protests against corporate seed control by Indian farmers.
Working and low income people and people of color. Rapid monopolization of
the food industry puts consumers at the mercy of corporate price fixers,
hurting low income consumers most. They will have few alternatives to
genetically engineered foods at supermarkets, putting them at greater risk for
nutritional deficiency, allergic reactions, and diseases caused by altered
hormone levels in food. Rapidly advancing technologies of genetic screening
(hyped for their disease-curing potential) may increase genetic discrimination
against those who seek insurance, employment and promotion (e.g. sickle cell
trait is found in 10.0% of African-Americans, even though only 0.2% contract
the disease).
- Women.
Increasing monopolization of food production results in many third world women
being unable to grow food to feed their families. Test tube fertilization and
artificial implantation of embryos threatens to further lock women into the
role of breeding machines to produce efficient workers.
Indigenous people and third world countries. Perhaps the greatest social
injustice is the subjugation of indigenous knowledge to corporate profit.
Brian Tokar wrote in Earth for Sale, "The biotechnology industry has proved
particularly solicitous of plants, animals, and people that display unique
genetic traits which can be transferred using recombinant DNA technology into
common crop varieties, bacteria, and other life forms for future study and
commercial exploitation. The traditional peoples who are largely responsible
for the centuries-long cultivation and protection of beneficial plants and
animals receive little if any benefit from these activities."
Need for a US grassroots event
1997 was a banner year for the biotechnology industry, with successful cloning
experiments in Scotland achieving worldwide headlines and some 30 million
acres of genetically engineered crops grown in the US alone. International
opponents of genetic engineering have escalated their activities as well, with
partial bans on engineered foods passed in Austria, Italy and Luxembourg, and
new direct actions against engineered crops in Germany, Ireland and Australia.
Also in 1997, the organic sector experienced astounding growth as those
seeking to avoid genetically engineered food voted with their feet (and their
shopping carts). Industry, noticing the move, tried to soften the blow by
aggressively lobbying to change the newly promulgated national organic
standards so they would allow the inclusion of genetically engineered inputs
into the official definition of "organic."
Green members of the European Parliament have taken a leadership role in
opposing importation of genetically engineered food from the US. Activists
throughout the world participated in two coordinated "Weeks of Action" against
biotechnology, first in April, then again in October.
Though there are numerous embryonic networks which challenge the corporate
view, there has yet to be an event which brings these groups together to
coordinate their efforts.
Why St. Louis?
There has never been a major gathering critical of biotechnology and genetic
engineering in the US midwest. St. Louis is a natural location because it is
the site of the World Headquarters of Monsanto, the most powerful single
player in the US biotechnology industry. Two of the most popular attractions
in the city are the St. Louis Science Center and the Missouri Botanical
Gardens. Both have a strong impact on education in the metropolitan area
since they arrange frequent tours by busloads of children from public and
private schools. Both institutions are heavily subsidized by Monsanto and its
name features prominently in their buildings.
Financing
Since it requires thousands of dollars to host an event of this scope, several
people across the country are collaborating to write grants. (We welcome
others to participate with us.)
We are appealing to the grassroots to help make the Grassroots Gathering on
Genetic Engineering a success by CO-SPONSORSHIP, which means very early
preregistration. We are asking co-sponsors to send a check for $145 by June
15, 1998 to the Gateway Greens, P.O. Box 8094, St. Louis MO 63156.
In return, (1) the co-sponsoring group will have the registration fee covered
for 3 members or will have $145 apply to registration and lodging of 1 or 2
members; (2) the group will be listed as a co-sponsor in the brochure, and (3)
the group may have a literature table at the event. If co-sponsors can send
more than $145, all will apply to registration and lodging costs for their
members. Individual membership is $45 until June 15. $55 the day of the
conference.
If you are interested in attending or co-sponsoring, please email
T4shea@aol.com as soon as possible.

Midwest Summer Odyssey: Tending the Fire of Our Heart
University of Wisconsin
River Falls, Wisconsin, USA
August 4-9, 1998
Sponsored by Midwest Odyssey (A chapter of the International Institute of
Integral Human Sciences)
Throughout time, many enlightened civilizations maintained a sacred fire
for their communities. These fires represented the spiritual essence of the
people and their connection to a higher power. Sacred fire was a key element
in ritual, prayer and healing.
Those tending the fire held a sacred duty. To maintain the guiding light and
spiritual energy source for their people, an inner fire must also burn brightly
in their hearts, fueled by a purity of life and ideals. Their care and
attention to both the inner and outer fires enabled them to use the fire as
an instrument for transformation.
Each member of the community supported the fire tenders with their prayers and
the necessities of life...another way of tending the fires.
Although today, not all temples and communities keep a sacred fire burning in
the traditional way, we now know that we are all fire tenders...shining with
the inner radiance of our own ideals and desires.
As we grow physically and spiritually, our ideals and desires also mature and
sometimes change. Sometimes there will be challenges to maintain the inner
fire. Then, we each become a light for the other, should the inner fire dim.
As wel hold the inner fire true and steady within us, we support the fire
of our community, our planet and our universe.
The summer, ignite and be ignited as we come into contact with this powerful,
elemental force of nature! Explore, experience and learn ways by which we can
keep the fire burning with our hearts....

21st Century Well-Being: Discovering Your Personal Medicine
Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health
Lenox, Massachusetts, USA
September 24-27, 1998
You're invited to a groundbreaking gathering, a time for health care
professionals and lay people to come together for an experience of mind/body
learning.
Medicine is clearly on an evolutionary course. The 20th century has
brought remarkable breakthroughs in medical technology. And the evolution
into the 21st century requires a recognition that our healing relies not
only on technological advancement, but also on the state of the art of our
hearts and souls.
For the past two decades a model of wellness rather than disease has been
gaining momentum. It is a model that allows us to tap into our "personal
medicine" -- a sense of what ails us and what heals us. It is a movement
away from the experts outside ourselves and toward finding the expert inside.
It is also a place where the ancient healing methodologies of the East meet
and lend depth to the accomplishments of the West.
Join some of the key pioneers of the last quarter century in complementary
medicine and benefit from experiential workshops and presentations that offer
ways to rejuvenate, restore balance, and create openings that are
life-transforming.
Bring your curiosity. Take home practical tools for cultivating your optimal
well-being.
Experience a Conference Kripalu Style
A conference at Kripalu Center offers a refreshing change from the typical
large gathering held in a hotel or conference center. We provide a more intimate
environment in a serene, retreat setting. To complement your conference
experience we offer multiple ways to nourish the body, mind, and spirit:
twice-daily Kripalu Yoga classes, meditation instruction, spirited noontime
Kripalu DansKinetics, three delicious vegetarian meals a day, and use of
our saunas and whirlpools. Our magnificent walking trails promise to be
colorful and inviting when you arrive, leading to breathtaking vistas for
viewing the fall foliage. Relaxing Health Services (massage, shiatsu, energy
balancing, and others) are available at an additional cost.
Access your "personal Medicine" -- your body's natural wisdom -- and gain
an increased sense of empowerment

Spirituality & Healing in Medicine with Special Emphasis on
Death and Dying
The Westin Hotel, Copley Place
Boston, Massachusetts, USA
December 12-14, 1998
Presented by:
Harvard Medical School and The Mind/Body Medical Institute of Beth
Israel Deaconess Medical Center
Under the Direction of Herbert Benson, MD
An objective of this course is to explore the relationship between
spirituality and healing in medicine and to give perspectives from
world religions. The physiological, neurological and psychological
effects of healing resulting from spirituality will be presented.
Special emphasis will be given to death and dying.
For more than 30 years laboratories at the Harvard Medical School have
systematically studied the benefits of mind/body interactions. The
research established that when a person engages in a repetitive
praayer, word, sound or phrase and when intrusive thoughts are passively
disregarded, a specific set of physiologic changes ensue. There is decreased
metabolism, heart rate, rate of breathing and distinctive slower brain
waves. These changes are the opposite of those induced by stress and have been
labeled the relaxation response. In conjunction with nutrition, exercise
and stress management, the relaxation response is an effective therapy in a
number of diseases that include hypertension, cardiac rhythm irregularities,
many forms of chronic pain, insomnia, infertility, the symptoms of cancer and
AIDS, premenstrual syndrome, anxiety and mild and moderate depression. In fact,
to the extent that any disease is caused or made worse by stress to that extent
this physiological state is an effective therapy.
This work led to consideration of the healing effects of spirituality since
research later established that people experienced increased spirituality as
a result of eliciting this state regardless of whether or not they used a
religious repetitive focus. Spirituality was expressed as experiencing the
presence of a power, a force, an energy, or what was perceived of as God and
this presence was close to the person. Furthermore, spirituality was
associated with fewer medical symptoms.
It is now an appropriate time to bring these findings into fuller contact
with the extremely rich and diverse experiences of the spirituality and healing
of religious traditions. Similarities and differences amongst long-standing
religious practices will be explored from objective, scientific research as
well as from subjective points of view.
Data from different religions of the world will be presented and discussions of
death and dying will be emphasized. Although health professionals are superb
at informing patients about the scientific and medical components of their
serious and life-threatening diseases, there is often a wide gap between that
level of communication and that at which patients hear the words. The patients
are frequently listening at levels related to the meaning of a death-related
disease to their subsequent lives and to their spirituality. This course
strives to narrow the gap.
Other data on spirituality and healing and the power and biology of belief
will be discussed. In addition, the course will strive to identify future
empirical research on the healing aspects of spirituality in medicine.
Appropriate music relating to solace, spirituality and healing will be played
at breaks during the conference to enhance the learning experience.
